Indulge in a Flavorful Taste of St. Thomas Island: Discover the Island through a Food Tour

Beep Beep! That was the sound of my alarm alerting me to get ready for a wonderful St. Thomas day.

Today is the day the people of St. Thomas will experience Miracle on Main. Miracle on Main is a once a year celebration of the holiday spirit in St. Thomas. A day filled with vendors, music, games, a lighted boat parade, and lots more. Picture happy people, great music and dancing.

The clouds were also gathering to celebrate. I check the weather, it shows it might rain a bit later that afternoon. Rain or not, St. Thomas is calling my name to explore the island.

Over on Main street, a few drizzles fall my way, but nothing to dissuade me from exploring the beautiful downtown before I meet a group for a food tasting tour. I meandered round corners on busy and quiet streets, a water front and cheery store owners ready to start their day.

There are beautiful alleyways filled with restaurants and cafes, busy safari taxi drivers beckoning to tourists for tours on the island.

I walk along the waterfront, cross the street through colorful stores, duck into stores to hide away from the rain at times, but eventually find my way to Fort Christian to start on the highly anticipated food tasting tour.

I meet up with an enthusiastic tour guide and 8 other tourists ready to explore the food and culture of St. Thomas.

We get a little history of the culture of the island and its people before we set off to enjoy the many flavors of the Island. Our first stop is at a restaurant to enjoy the famous bushwacker drink. Bushwacker is a cocktail that was invented in 1975 on the island of St. Thomas.

With drink in hand, we cross a few streets, walk through the city center where musicians are setting up to entertain the people of St. Thomas for Miracle on Main. The rain begins to pour again. We grab umbrellas and rain jackets and happily go on our merry way.

Our next stop – E’s Garden Teahouse. Here we enjoy delicious spinach and saltfish quiche with spicy sauce, yummy raspberry hibiscus tea and great conversation and laughs.

Things are getting exciting – where to next? Come on over with us to the Tuck shop, a local food joint for fried plantain, rice and chicken. All I can think of is, I want more of this food.

We take a few more turns in downtown through Palm Passage and end up at the wonderful Side Street Pub.

The rain has calmed down now, and we happily make our very own painkiller drink – pineapple juice, some orange juice, a drop of nutmeg, 4 secs of dark rum and coconut cream. Keep mixing, keep pouring and you will have yourself a delicious painkiller made by you – the newest bartender in town.

Pair your painkiller with pork taco and sweet chili sauce, and you’ve got yourself a beautiful island afternoon.

We are not done yet, come on over with us to Virgilio’s Restaurant where a wonderful chef makes us banana flambe on open flame right next to our table. Imagine a cozy rainy day, warm fire, delicious flambe paired with ice cream, and laughter that will warm your soul. Ah! This tour is just what I need on my first full day on the island.

Just when we thought we had had the best of the best, our wonderful tour guide leads us on one more flavorful adventure – rum tasting. It was simply a beautiful afternoon tasting variety of rum, and singing happy birthday to two people in our tour group.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and the people on the tour. Every taste left me with great memories. Every chit chat was filled with smiles and laughter. Every cheer was filled with happiness.

I hope you always choose an open road to a new adventure.

Eliza
